I work with people after breast cancer + prophylactic mastectomy, enhancing physical and performance recovery.

Toss and turn sleep, sensitivity to bras, hugs and intimacy, shoulder pain and weakness in play and work tasks can all be better managed with a rehabilitation approach.

As an Occupational Therapist, I have worked for 30+ years helping women after breast cancer, where the symptoms have persisted beyond a reasonable amount of time.

I know that living with persisent unexplained pain adds to the stress of dealing with life after cancer. Early rehab after a breast cancer diagnosis is great way of reducing stress and improving health and wellness.

This service will suit people who want to take charge: get to the root cause of their pain and be active participants in their recovery.

Scar tissue and adhesions are one significant cause for arm restrictions and persistent pain after breast surgery. Especially if healing was slower than expected: seromas, infections, diabetes, prior radiation, previous shoulder problems.

Scar tissue after breast cancer surgery can mostly be a hidden problem, as sensation is reduced and tightness may be very deep under the skin.

Can telehealth offer an effective approach for managing physical impairments after breast cancer?

Yes,  this is an innovative and cost -effective service for people who do not have access to a breast cancer trained health professional in their town/city.

Cording, mastectomy or lumpectomy tightness , arm movement restrictions  and shoulder pain can be managed by online coaching.

It will be very different to a face to face service - you will need to:

  • be a very active participant
  • you, or your partner, will learn to do what I would do in the clinic: hands on rehab techniques and exercises.
  • learn and practice a range of different treatment methods to see which ones suit you.

Musculo- skeletal root causes for persistent pain will be investigated to develop your own self- treatment plan.

Examples of two breast cancer rehab programs that work with telehealth:

 1. Assess and treatment of arm movement restriction and pain.                                                             2. Assessment and general recommendations from your rehab adviser

Suitable for: Early signs of cording, delayed cording or mastectomy scar treatment                           Suitable for: Any stage after diagnosis, especially best at 6, 12, 18 months after surgery.

4- 6 weeks after radiation completed
